After a nail-biting finish to their Junior European race, where Joe and his Elmbridge CC partner, Oscar, finished 4th, the pair have now been named in the 13 strong team to represent GB at the World Marathon Championships in South Africa in September.
After a good start in the race in Portugal, the boys found themselves after a while in the third group of boats, 30 seconds or more behind the leading group. Somehow, on the last of the 6 laps, they forced themselves forward and managed to come out of the last portage in the lead. Sadly, they were unable to keep that position, and were passed again by the two Hungarian and the Danish teams, but finished a highly impressive 4th of the 14 boats that started the 26.6 km course, with 5 portages.
