There was a bit of a lull in Hasler races, although a few did pop down to Tewkesbury for a new race. There were a number of podiums and Michael P broke into the top divisions, with promotion to Div 3, Cian went up to Div 5, and Colette back up to 6.

The big August event was the National Marathon Championships, hosted by Norwich CC.

Jessie U just missed out on being a double national champion, winning the U16 Girls K2 with Klara from Falcon, and taking silver in the K1 race, having seen a big lead disappear with problems at the second portage. As a result, she has been selected to race U18 for the development team at the French National Marathon Championships next month.

Joe P and Alice M managed to navigate their way around the 90 odd other boats on the Mixed K2 start line for an impressive 3rd place, and Joe just missed another podium with 4th in the U23 K1 class.

Those not racing at Norwich held the fort back at home, running our annual big fundraiser for festival goers at Fairport Convention, Cropredy. Despite a smaller team of helpers than usual, the feedback was, as ever, fantastic – people have even taken the time to write and thank everyone for the great service and great food. Many thanks to all who came for breakfast – and all who made it happen despite losing half the club to the Nationals.

The 2018/9 season is now over – except for the small matter of the Hasler Finals next month. We finished 3rd in the region, so well done to all who raced and brought home the points. At the last race of the season, Oli J put a frustrating season behind him with 3rd place in Div 7at Longridge, at that long-awaited promotion to 6.

Just a year after the birth of her son, double Olympian Angela Hannah is back in the women’s 500m K4 crew. This weekend they were racing at the World Championships looking for Olympic selection, and finishing a strong 4th in the B Final. Fingers crossed now for Tokyo qualification.

This weekend it’s the National Sprint Championships and Open Wildwater Championships. Then it’s already the first Hasler race of the new season; oh, and a club team off to race at The Flanders Cup in Belgium; and Rob J will be at the World Wildwater Sprint Championships. It never stops!

If you’d like to get involved – as you can see there is something for everyone – we have our next Open Afternoon on Saturday 7 Sept from 1.30. Come along and have a go.
